Things my mom said about some music I made her listen to while we painted my living room together:

Andrew Bird, Souverian: “This isn’t bad…I didn’t say it’s good, it’s not bad, that’s all.”

CocoRosie, West Side: “What is all that crunching noise? She has a pretty voice, why is she messing it up with the crunching noise?…Hmph. Art is no excuse to turn something pretty into something ugly.”

Arcade Fire, The Suburbs: “How come they never play music that sounds nice like this on the radio? Every time I turn on those young people radio stations, their singing just sounds like waaaaah! Waaaah!” (Mariah Carey warble)

Great Lake Swimmers, Your Rocky Spine: “He sounds like Neil Young.”

David Vertesi, Mountainside: “His voice is very deep…I don’t hear any cello. Are you sure you played on this song? I think you-oh! I hear it now…That’s it?’

Miike Snow, Sans Soleil: “I like this.”

Patrick Watson, Where the Wild Things Are: “Do you like CBC? [Me: Yes.] Yes. Me too. I think they do a lot of things for young people’s music. But you know who I like? I like that Jonathan Goldstein. He’s so funny! He has that crazy friend who always calls him on the phone and yells at him and calls Jonathan stupid, but it is the friend who is the stupid one! Haha!”

Blonde Redhead, 23: “Oh. This is very strange.”
